A Reservist's Tale Of A Tour

Sickened, Saddened, Disturbed…

Today’s events in Panjwaii, Kandahar Province have me a bit down. One savage act has the potential to undo so much progress, damage so many relationships, distract so much attention from anything positive. And every update sounds worse and worse as the whole story comes out. There have been tragic incidents in the past that strain relationships, but this one strikes me as particularly horrific.

I can only hope that swift, firm, publicized  justice finds the individual who committed such heinous murders. He is a stain on our profession, and everything we’re supposed to stand for. This isn’t why we’re here, and it doesn’t help anyone.

  1. This is another sad reminder that soldiers are the “sword” as well as the “word” of the political process. But, above all, soldiers are simply human beings. We are all under stress, but the trials of a soldier are often too much to bear. There is no excuse here; it is just the cold reality of war and the human animal. We have amazing technology to take life and to save life; we have higher levels of education and training to do the same; however – underneath it all, we are simply “human” and we have not really changed. We have always been good and evil, kind and cruel, we love and we hate: we are all of these things and our lives hang by a thread every day. The soldier is the gritty embodiment of what we are and the most profund expression of the paradox that is “mankind”. God be with you Nick. Bruce
